Loch Shin and Beyond
The County of Sutherland
The historic county of Sutherland is home to some of the most spellbinding scenery you will find in the entire United Kingdom. From the dramatic sea cliffs to the west to the ancient mountain peaks it is truly a delightful place for any lover of the great outdoors to visit.
Local Area
Loch Shin Luxury Pods is located to the north side of the loch. The nearest village, Lairg, is 5 miles away, at the southern tip of the Loch. Relatively large and pretty central in the county, it is a great place to visit with places to eat and drink, a good mix of shops, and plenty to see and do.
Loch Shin is the largest Loch in Sutherland at around 17 miles long, running NW to SE. The Loch flows out to the south into the River Shin.
A short drive from Lairg will take you to the site of the Falls of Shin, an attractive and dramatic waterfall. The Visitors Centre is famous for being one of the best places in Scotland to see Salmon leaping upstream and is a great starting point for a number of walks and forest trails.
For those seeking a more challenging walk, why not tackle Ben More Assynt (998m) to the West, the highest point in the county of Sutherland. There are plenty of other fantastic mountain walks beyond Ben More Assynt too, with other highlights including Conival (987m) and Ben Klibreck (962m).
If you prefer to see the area on two wheels, there are many and varied options for cyclists with challenging climbs as well as more laid-back scenic routes. There really is something for everyone!
Nature and bird watching
The whole area is home to a range of wildlife and the loch and surrounding marshland attract a mix of species. To view the local birds and other wildlife without disturbing them, Dalchork bird hide is located around 2 miles from Lairg on the A836.
Historic sites
If you’re interested in exploring some of the area’s history, we’d recommend a trip to Dunrobin Castle, which is around a 25-mile drive. Located on the east coast overlooking the Moray Firth, it is the largest and most northerly of Scotland’s great houses and dates from around 1275.
North Coast 500 and other driving tours
Loch Shin Luxury Pods is located just off of the North Coast 500 and offers a perfect base to visit many of the sites and locations on the route.
For something a little different, we have an alternative route that misses out the north-easterly tip of Scotland in favour of some of the more inland roads.
We will be happy to advise you on some of the other routes worth exploring, such as the drive from Lairg to Tongue which offers stunning scenery to match the best of the NC500.
