Five of the top foods when touring the Scottish Highlands

The Scottish Highlands is a region renowned for its natural beauty, rich history, and culture. But did you know that the Highlands are also a foodie paradise?

From enticing fresh seafood to traditional Scottish dishes, the Highlands offer a unique culinary experience. Here are some of the best foods to try during your visit to the Scottish Highlands.

Venison

The Scottish Highlands are known for their wild deer and venison is a popular meat in the region. Venison is lean and flavourful, and it can be served in a variety of ways, from steaks to stews. It is often paired with root vegetables and a rich gravy.

Fresh Seafood

The Scottish Highlands are surrounded by water, and the region's seafood is some of the freshest and most delicious in the world. From scallops to langoustines, you can find a variety of seafood dishes in the Highlands. The famous Loch Fyne oysters are a must-try delicacy, and you can also find excellent fish and chips in many coastal towns.

Try Sutherland Game & Shellfish, which are based very near the Loch Shin Glamping Pods.

Cullen Skink

Cullen Skink is a thick and creamy soup made from smoked haddock, potatoes, onions and cream. It is a comforting and warming dish that is perfect for a cold Highland day. The soup takes its name from the village of Cullen in Moray and it is a staple in Scottish cuisine.

Haggis

Haggis is the quintessential Scottish dish, and no visit to the Highlands is complete without trying it. Haggis is a savoury pudding made from sheep's heart, liver, and lungs, mixed with oatmeal, onions and spices, all encased in a sheep's stomach. It may sound unusual, but it is a delicious and hearty dish that is often served with turnips and potatoes.

Black Pudding

Black pudding is a type of blood sausage that is popular in Scotland and other parts of the UK. It is made from pork blood, oatmeal, and spices, and it has a rich and earthy flavour. Black pudding is often served as part of a full Scottish breakfast, alongside eggs, bacon and baked beans.

All of these amazing dishes are available in the areas surrounding the Loch Shin pods. Local restaurant The Pier is one of our favourites and is highly recommended.
